neil niwas: A Treasured Stay in Bangkok

Built around 1890, neil niwas is one of Bangkok’s most extraordinary stays, one that inspire travel. A historic hotel in a timeless setting, at the pinnacle of good taste and the art of hospitality.
From Rama V to Present days
Originally intended for a high-ranking Thai government official, Mr. Phraya Aharn Borirak, the building was first used as a home. Then known as Baan Phraya Aharn Borirak (literally, “the house of Phraya Aharn Borirak”), the property was passed down through several generations, before finally being transferred to the Mahasit family in 2008. In 2014, the new owners undertook extensive renovations to preserve the building’s integrity and bring it up to date.
Seven years later, a new era began for the property, which was renamed “neil niwas”, meaning “the green house”. The Mashahit family, who still live in one wing of the house, have given it a new vocation by opening its doors to travelers eight months a year, as a way of sharing its heritage, both architectural and historical.

Every Shade of Green
In all tones of green, neil niwas epitomizes the architecture of the Rama V era (1868-1910), characterized by the introduction of Western elements to traditional Thai architecture. The presence of shutters throughout the property adds a distinctive European touch, while the uniform use of teak wood, typical of Thai construction, adds a more classical style. This constant blending of genres throughout the residence makes it a precious vestige of its era. Although enlarged during its restoration, neil niwas has retained as much of its original structure as possible, including the original staircases.

At the rear of the house, on the banks of the klong (canal), the large pavilion originally used as the main dwelling now welcomes guests for meals and tea time. At the front, the large garden is home to typical Bangkok fruit trees, which echo and enhance the colors of the building. Mango, apple and banana trees, as well as a 130-year-old lychee tree, create the perfect backdrop for a canal-side breakfast in the enveloping, oasis-like atmosphere so typical of Bangkok.

neil niwas – The Hotel
On arrival, a guided tour offered by the owner introduces us to the hotel and its history. We’re then taken to the four rooms, each represented by an animal. (owl, deer, pig, frog). Spacious, warm and aesthetically pleasing, each one reflects the image of the house, offering a blend of European comfort and Thai exoticism, in an impeccable wood-panelled décor.

The space is accentuated by large windows offering garden views, with light curtains that filter natural light while adding a touch of lightness. The bathroom, adjoining the bedroom, combines modernity with natural materials, such as a smooth stone sink and walk-in shower. Every detail has been thought through to create a rejuvenating bubble, from the luxury toiletries to the extra-comfortable bed, right down to little touches, like a superb selection of teas and treats.
Tastefully decorated, the large lounge and dining room give a real sense of home and add to the intimate atmosphere. Perfect for relaxing after a day of discovery.

Old Town Flair
Located on the left bank of the Chao Phraya, Neil Niwas is a discreet landmark in the Old Town. This cosmopolitan district, rich in history, offers a window on authentic Bangkok, with its impressive ethnic and religious diversity. Witness the chants of the mosque prayer that lull you awake at dawn, and the Buddhist monks who are part of the daily landscape. Here, time stands still, giving way to an unadorned Bangkok. Let yourself be transported by visiting the nearby temples, strolling through the residential districts, and discovering tasty street food in the local eateries, all away from the crowds.
For even more adventure, the hotel’s proximity to the famous Wat Arun and Wat Pho Buddhist temples is a definite plus. On another note, the larger-than-life Iconsiam shopping mall is just a ferry ride away, for an experience as colorful as the city. Cross the riverbank to discover the famous flower market, as well as Chinatown and its unparalleled street food, both of which are absolute must-sees. For something a bit more romantic, the hotel staff will be happy to arrange a private boat trip across the klongs, the ultimate way to discover the city.

Combining modern comforts with traditional Thai hospitality, neil niwas is ideal for those seeking both tranquility and accessibility right in the heart of the city, in a relaxing, historic and refined setting. It is a stay not to be missed and one of Bangkok’s hidden treasures, creating its charm and poetry.
An exceptional travel experience.
